Public Hearing Set for Historic Property Nominations

Post Date:08/15/2024 1:53 PM

An August 28 public hearing is slated to hear input from residents about the historic significance of three Greensboro properties. They are the South Benbow Road Historic District, the Edward and Francis S. Lowenstein house at 2104 Granville Rd., and the Tanlea Woods house at 2904 Wynnewood Dr.

The City’s Historic Preservation Commission will conduct the hearing beginning at 4 pm Wednesday, August 28, in the Plaza Level Conference Room of the Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington St. Public input is submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in support of the nominations.

The three nominations are in the home stretch of being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

South Benbow would be Greensboro's first historically African American neighborhood to receive the honor. The Lowenstein and Woods houses were the work of Greensboro’s preeminent Modernist architect Edward Lowenstein.
