A permit to block a sidewalk and/or street is required whenever a portion of a sidewalk and/or street is to be blocked in any way that will alter traffic flow, affect parking, or alter pedestrian patterns.


Please apply and pay 24 hours before work activities are to be performed.

Temporary Right-of-Way Closure Permit requests are now accepted online.
You can also pay for a permit online.

Lane Closure Fees:

Roadway
- Major Thoroughfares (non-peak): $35 per day per lane
- Major Thoroughfares (peak): $70 per day per lane
- Other city streets (non-peak): $10 per day per lane
- Other city streets (peak): $20 per day per lane

Sidewalk and Parking Spaces/Loading Zones (CBD)
- Sidewalks: $10 per day per sidewalk
- Unmetered On-Street Parking Spaces/Loading Zones: Equivalent to the cost of metered parking spaces per day; $5 per day per space.
- Metered Parking Spaces: $10 per day per space; subject to change based on User Fee Structure of Parking Operations.

Sidewalk and Parking Spaces/Loading Zone
- Sidewalks/Shoulders: $2 per day per sidewalk/shoulder
- On-Street Parking Spaces/Loading Zone: $2 per day per space/zone

Peak hours are defined as 7-9 am and 4-6 pm Mondays through Fridays, however, peak hour closures are not permitted without special approval. A $15 application fee will be applied to the opening of new permits, not extensions. Permits stand to be revoked by a City of Greensboro official should the holder fail to follow the stated conditions of the permit.

Permits to block a sidewalk and/or street shall be issued in accordance with all the requirements of Chapter 18, Article III, and Chapter 26, Article I of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances, Chapter XXIV of the North Carolina State Building Code, Part VI of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and with the City’s Work Area Traffic Control Handbook published by the Greensboro Department of Transportation, and of any other limitations that may be set forth in the permit.
