A transportation impact studies (TIS) is a detailed examination and analysis of a transportation system supported by data collection. A study is typically performed to analyze the impact on the surrounding transportation system.

The process is as follows:

1. The scope of the study is identified and defined.
2. Data is collected and analyzed.
3. Study results are usually summarized in a report.
4. The report is submitted for review to the appropriate agencies.

Transportation studies serve to quantify the extent of impacts to a transportation system and to provide solutions to problems identified in the study.

There are a number of situations that may trigger a TIS for a new development within Greensboro city limits. There is no typical cost for conducting studies since transportation problems often are unique in scope and sensitive to regional differences in travel patterns. A transportation study can range in cost from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars based on the complexity of the project and the study extent.

If a TIS is required for zoning or rezoning, it must be submitted at least 21 days prior to the application deadline of the desired Greensboro Zoning Commission meeting by no later than 5 pm EST. If a TIS is required for site plan submittal, the TIS should be submitted as early as possible to avoid delays in the final TRC approval.
