The City of Greensboro has issued an operator permit to Bird Rides Inc. to offer electric scooters and bikes for rent within the city limits. The equipment is deployed throughout downtown Greensboro and on UNC Greensboro’s campus and surrounding areas. The eco-friendly transportation option may be rented through Bird’s free mobile phone application.

For user safety, Bird recommends riders wear a helmet when riding Bird e-scooters and e-bikes. You must be an adult to ride. Riders are required to use designated parking areas as designated in the app when their ride is complete. See all Greensboro Safety Guidelines below for more details.

Residents can report issues, from maintenance to improper parking, directly through the Bird app, by emailing Bird, or by calling Bird at 1-866-205-2442.

“The City of Greensboro is committed to providing residents safe, seamless, and equitable transportation choices. Shared-used scooters and bikes give residents more options to get to work, school, and play. This partnership with Bird is just one more way we are making Greensboro a car-optional city,” said Greensboro Transportation Director Hanna Cockburn.

Bird aims to make cities more livable by reducing car trips, traffic, and carbon emissions. The company’s scooters, developed by an in-house team of top engineers and vehicle-design experts, offer residents without cars another transportation option.

E-Bike and E-Scooter Safety Guideline

  • Only people 18 and older may ride these e-bikes and e-scooters.
  • Only ride on city streets with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
  • Follow all traffic laws as operating other vehicles, such as riding only on the right side of the road, stopping at traffic signals and stop signs, and yielding to pedestrians.
  • No riding on sidewalks or in parking decks.
  • E-bikes and e-scooters may use bike lanes.
  • When parking, pay close attention to the area around you. If parking on the sidewalk, leave at least a six-foot wide clear pathway for pedestrians. Do not block sidewalk dining areas, bus stops, handicapped ramps or parking, driveways, loading zones, bike racks or benches.
  • Helmets are strongly encouraged.
