About Project
The public is invited to review the East Greensboro Greenway Feasibility Study, a one year analysis identifying a viable greenway alignment in East Greensboro.
The East Greensboro Greenway is envisioned to be a shared-use path and linear park with multiple spurs that serve both transportation and recreational needs to better connect predominately low-income communities of color to the downtown core and improve multimodal access to east Greensboro's recreational, cultural, and educational destinations.
The East Greensboro Greenway will connect the J. Douglas Galyon Depot and Barber Park. Along the way, it will provide connections to NC A&T State University, Bennett College, Historic Magnolia House, Windsor-Chavis-Nocho Community Complex, Downtown Greenway, Bingham Park, Gateway Gardens, Hayes-Taylor YMCA, several K-12 schools, and the site of the former Hampton Elementary School (planned for future redevelopment/public use).
The overarching goal of the project is to create a vital asset, developed hand-in-hand with the community, that:
- Serves as a safe and inclusive mobility option for people of all ages and abilities
- Reflects east Greensboro's culture and creativity
- Results in more equitable outcomes for the health, safety, and quality of life of east Greensboro residents.
The East Greensboro Greenway Feasibility Study evaluates potential route scenarios to determine a preferred route for both the greenway spine and its spurs. The foundation of this study is robust community engagement to reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of the community it serves. The study also includes cost estimates and a recommended implementation plan to construct and maintain the greenway.
The project is led by the City of Greensboro with the support of the NC Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division (NCDOT IMD) and the Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (GUAMPO).
Next Steps
The East Greensboro Greenway preferred alignment is currently under consideration for amending into Greensboro Urban Area MPO’s Transportation Plans. The MPO is inviting the public to share their thoughts October 24 until November 22 on the greenway and amending the preferred greenway alignment into the following plans:
- 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)
- Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP)
- Bicycle, Pedestrian, Trails, and Greenways (BiPed) Plan
Amending the preferred alignment into the Regional Transportation Plans will help align future transportation investments with the community’s strategic goals, fostering a healthier and more connected Greensboro.
