Permit Requirements & Process

To receive a permit, you must submit an application and provide:

  1. A valid vehicle registration form. Vehicle must be owned or leased by you, your parents, legal guardian, spouse or business owner.
  2. A valid North Carolina Driver’s license
  3. Additional documentation:
    • If you are a resident applying for a permit in Zones 1-3 or Southside, you must submit proof of residency, such as a current signed and dated lease, utility bill, or bank statement that includes applicant name and address.
    • If you are an employee applying for a permit in Southside, you must submit a current pay stub.

Once staff reviews the online or paper application and the required items for verification, you will be notified by e-mail, phone, or in-person that your license plate is now registered in our license plate recognition system. That system is used by parking enforcement to determine who can park in what areas.

Renewals

Permits are not automatically renewed. Applicants are required to renew permits each year online, by mail, or in person in June.
