How to plan your GTA ride to school

Planning to use the GTA system is as simple as ABC...

  • A - Find your current location and the closest GTA bus route and stop.
This can be done automatically online using Google Maps or visiting TrackMyGTA.com. You can also refer to printed schedules on this website or call GTA Customer Service at 336-335-6499 during operating hours.
  • B - Determine the route and bus stop you will use to arrive at your school. More than likely this will be the same route, but if you are traveling from farther away, you may need to change buses at the Depot transfer center downtown. Don't forget to build in extra time to walk from the bus stop to your class.
  • C - Confirm the scheduled time you need to arrive at your bus stop. Google Maps will provide this number while the TrackMyGTA.com site will also show you where the bus is and how long until actual arrival.

Route 1 sample scheduleWhile we expect most students to plan their trip using our current transit mobile technology, some may prefer to use our printed maps and schedules available on this site. To use them, you merely need to know:

  •  Where you are and where you are going.
  • What time you need to be there.
  1.  First, find the route schedule that serves your present location and your destination.
  2. Next, look for your destination on the schedule and read down the list of arrival times* until you find your preferred time.
  3. Finally, trace the times backwards to your current location. This is the time you need to be at the bus stop to board your bus.

If your trip involves the use of more than one route, apply the same method starting with the ending bus route and work backwards.

*Please note that the stops represented on the schedule are “timepoints” used to pace the bus progress along the route. There are additional stops in between the timepoints, averaging every other block. You may need to estimate your departure and arrival times in between timepoints.

Riding Tips
As riding a public transit bus is slightly different from a yellow school bus, please be mindful of the following:

  • Oncoming traffic is not required to stop for a transit bus. Use caution when crossing streets.GCSOnecard
  • When boarding the bus, scan your Student One Card to confirm student and school status.
  • Board at the front door of the bus and leave by the back doors for quicker service.
  • The bus will only stop when the operator sees a person waiting to board or someone has announced their wish to get off the bus by pulling the yellow stop request cord above the windows.
  • The destination signs on the front of all buses contain the following helpful information: route number, route name, and designation of Inbound (headed towards downtown) or outbound (headed away from downtown). If you get on the bus headed in the wrong direction, no worries. The bus will eventually turn around and follow the same route back. If you are unsure, just ask the bus operator.
  • All GTA buses offer bicycle racks to carry your bike with you.
  • Most buses have USB ports to top off your phones. Don't forget your charging cords!
  • To be among the first to learn about weather delays, cancellations and other important service information, follow us on Twitter and Facebook @gtaheat, and Instagram @gtaheatbus.
  • Any food or drink brought on the bus must be in closed containers and cannot be consumed on the bus.
  • Safety of GTA riders is of utmost importance. Professionally trained operators have direct contact with our central dispatch who can immediately respond in the unlikely event of an onboard emergency. Riders are encouraged to notify their operator of any issues or can confidentially submit concerns directly to staff using See Say Now!
  • Like GTA regular riders, students are subject to a disruptive behavior policy enforced by the operator and on-board cameras/microphones. Any violations will be reported to Guilford County Schools and can lead to suspension from use of GTA services.
For any questions regarding how to use GTA, contact GTA Customer Service at 336-335-6499 during service hours or email us.
