Hate crimes are crimes of prejudice. A hate crime is a legal category used to describe bias-motivated violence.

This type of crime occurs when an offender targets a victim because of his or her perceived membership in a certain social group defined by race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, class, age, nationality, gender, gender identity, social status or political affiliation.

The violence can include harassment, damage to property, bullying, verbal abuse, assault, injury, and murder.

You have the right to be yourself without being discriminated against, harassed, attacked, or having your property damaged. If you believe you are the victim of a hate crime, call the police.
