The City of Greensboro regulates the operation of taxis pursuant to the City of Greensboro Code of Ordinances Chapter 28

There must be a Certificate of Necessity and Convenience for each taxicab operated within the City of Greensboro (Sec. 28-32), and each taxicab driver must obtain a driver’s permit (Sec. 28-66).

You must apply for these privileges through the City of Greensboro. Any vehicle or driver must be part of an established taxi cab company that operates under a trade name. 

Taxi Driver

To be a taxi cab driver, you must complete this Application for Permit to Drive Taxi Cab and bring it to the Records Division at 100 Police Plaza during any of these times:

  • Tuesdays from 9 am to 6 pm
  • Wednesdays from 2-6 pm
  • Thursdays from 2-6 pm.

You will also get fingerprinted at this time. The process costs $38. 

When fingerprints are complete bring your paperwork to the Taxi Inspector, located at the D3 substation, 300 S.Swing Rd.

Taxi Vehicle

To own a taxi cab vehicle, you must complete a Certificate of Convenience and Necessity and bring it to the Records Division at 100 Police Plaza, during any of these times:

  • Tuesdays from 9 am to 6 pm
  • Wednesdays from 2-6 pm
  • Thursdays from 2-6 pm.

Each application costs $100 and each taxi cab is required to have its own certificate/application. The application fee is non-refundable.

Next Step

After forms are completed by the Records Division, your paperwork will be sent to the Taxi Inspector, located at the D3 substation, 300 S. Swing Rd.  The inspector will notify you whether or not your application has been approved, and to make an appointment for the next step.

The Records Division has a notary public on staff who can certify your paperwork.

You may pay for either the driver or vehicle process by check drawn on local a bank or by debit card or credit card.
