The Program
Crime Stoppers is a community-oriented program that uses law enforcement, the community, and the media to fight crime.
Crime Stoppers provides a phone number for residents to call to give anonymous information on any criminal activity. Callers are given a code number in exchange for information and are asked to keep in contact with the program. If an arrest is made or property or drugs recovered, the caller becomes eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000. All reward money is raised by a civilian board of directors.
Launched in February 2017, Gun Stoppers is a partnership between the Greensboro Police Department and the Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers program. Its goal is to reduce violent crime by encouraging people to report illegal weapons in our city. Using resources and methods popularized by Crime Stoppers, people can submit anonymous tips about firearms possessed by felons, stolen guns, firearms used in crimes, and guns deemed illegal under North Carolina law. Gun Stoppers pays a minimum of a $250 cash reward (per gun) to anyone who notifies the tip line of an illegal weapon, and that tip leads to an arrest and/or confiscation of an illegal gun by the Greensboro Police Department or the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
Crime Stoppers is funded through donations from individuals and businesses interested in assisting the Greensboro Police Department in its effort to solve criminal cases. Tax-free donations to Crime Stoppers may be made through Pay Pal.

History
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, a program was developed to gain voluntary information from residents to help solve criminal cases. After a highly successful beginning, the program known as Crime Stoppers Inc. became operational. Housed within the Criminal Investigations Division of the Greensboro Police Department, Crime Stoppers is a program that encourages residents to provide information leading to the arrest and indictment of criminals in return for cash rewards and a promise of anonymity for the caller.
Since its beginning in Greensboro, Crime Stoppers has led to the clearance of more than 8,800 cases, precipitated the arrest of more than 15,000 individuals, and recovered stolen property or narcotics amounting to more than $25 million.
This program is an extremely valuable aid in our efforts to clear cases and recover stolen property. In 2003, the Greensboro/Guilford County Crime Stoppers Program became the first in the state of North Carolina to reach $15 million in recovered stolen property and narcotics.
The Greensboro/Guilford County Crime Stoppers has earned the Southeastern Crime Stoppers Association’s Productivity Award for the program’s role in solving the most cases, and recovering the most property and drugs in the population category of 300,000-400,000 in 2006-2009, 2011-14, and 2017-2018.
