The Greensboro Police Department have a variety of special teams that were created within the department in an effort to better serve the citizens of Greensboro and effectively manage specific types of events and unusual incidents. The teams include: the Special Events Team, Mobile Command Center, Peer Support Team, Honor Guard Team, Special Response Team, Negotiations Team and Hazardous Devices Team.
These teams are comprised of officers who perform these duties in addition to their standard work assignments. Team members train on a regular basis to ensure that they are proficient in the specific field relative to their team’s specialty.
These teams are available to assist not only local Greensboro Police Commanders, but are routinely deployed to assist state, municipal, county, and federal law enforcement agencies as well as offer assistance in natural disasters in our community and beyond.
The Greensboro Police stand ready to assist federal, state, county, and local agencies in times of crisis.
Special Events Team (SET)
The Special Events Team consists of approximately 110 officers with varying job descriptions ranging from Mobile Field Force, Bike Officers, Drone Pilots and ATV operators. This team is often activated for planned events such as the Folk Festival and Fun Fourth as additional manpower and security. They also have special training in land search and rescue as well as civil disturbances.
Mobile Command Center (MCC)
The Greensboro Police Department has a Mobile Command Center that is available for use in a variety of situations. It can be used when major crime scenes are being investigated, for when lengthy, large scale entertainment events occur in Greensboro or in conjunction with any other type of event where a central command center would make the collection or dissemination of information and resources easily coordinated.
Peer Support
The Peer Support Team is to provide all employees with an opportunity for peer support during times of personal or professional crisis. The nature of law enforcement work and its inherent responsibilities places a variety of physical and psychological demands on an individual and their family. The Peer Support Team is made up of sworn officers and professional staff.
Honor Guard Team
The Honor Guard Team is comprised of officers that provide military honors in the event of the death of a sworn active or retired officer. Those honors can include serving as pall-bearers, the posting of guard at the officers’ casket, the folding and or presentation of the flag and a 21-gun salute if requested. The Honor Guard Team also attends memorial services of officers that have died in the Line of Duty, across the state. Lastly the Honor Guard Team does the Presentation of Colors for such events as the Promotion ceremonies, the Police Academy Graduations and the Police/Citizens Awards Banquet, to name a few.
Special Response Team (SRT)
The Special Response Team is to enhance the effectiveness of police operations by handling incidents that by their nature exceed or strain the ability of normal patrol officers to provide police services safely. These unusual operational activities and problems include, but are not limited to, hostage incidents, armed barricaded persons, sniper incidents, aggravated suicide attempts, dignitary protection, high-risk search warrants, civil unrest, and other related tactical problems.
Negotiations Team (NT)
The Negotiation Team is to handle unusual operational activities and problems, including hostage incidents, armed barricaded persons, sniper incidents, aggravated suicide attempts, and other related tactical problems. The safety and freedom of individuals affected directly or indirectly by such incidents will be the goal of the Department when responding to and resolving these types of incidents.
Hazardous Devices Team (HDT)
The Hazardous Devices Team responds to incidents where law enforcement officers could potentially encounter hazardous, explosive and incendiary items in the performance of their duties. These items pose a grave threat of injury to untrained personnel. The Hazardous Devices Team will examine, handle, transport, and/or dispose of any explosive, incendiary device or military ordnance. They will also assist Fire Department as needed in hazardous environment situations.
