Criminal Investigations Division (CID)
The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is composed of eight investigative squads that are responsible for conducting follow-up investigations of reported offenses such as violent crimes, fraud and computer crimes.
Detectives who investigate domestic violence and crimes against children work at the Family Justice Center to provide coordinated services to these victims.
Another squad, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, looks for and arrests fugitives from justice.
The Homicide squad investigates murders and suspicious deaths. These detectives also investigate cold cases.
The Crime Stoppers program is also part of this division.
CID is the primary liaison with other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Members of this division participate in a variety of task forces and investigative groups, including the Violent Crimes Task Force, US Attorney’s Anti-Terrorism Advisory Committee, North Carolina Criminal Information Exchange, Piedmont Intelligence Group, Violent Fugitive Task Force, DEA Task Force, FBI's Safe Streets Task Force and Financial Crimes Task Force.

Forensic Services Division
The Forensic Services Division is composed of Crime Scene Investigators, Forensic Specialists, and the Property Evidence section. Its mission is to support the Police Department by providing state of the art crime scene processing, evidence collection, evidence examinations, and evidence custodial procedures. The Supervisor is Director Kelly Moore
Vice/Narcotics Division
The Vice/Narcotics Division works to suppress illegal vice and narcotics activity in the city through active investigations and enforcement of vice/narcotics laws and ordinances, and vigorous prosecution of vice/narcotics offenses, particularly those of an organized nature.
Electronic Monitoring Unit
The Electronic Monitoring Unit (EMU) is responsible for maintaining the department's Priority Offender List, as well as obtaining and implementing court orders for the electronic monitoring of priority offenders. The goal of EMU is to provide a level of supervision to offenders that will deter their criminal activity and change their patterns of criminal behavior. The supervisor is Sgt. M.E. Rakes.
