About the Pavilion
In 1998 the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department dedicated its indoor sport pavilion at Barber Park to George C. Simkins Jr. In the 1950s, Simkins played the first interracial tennis match in Greensboro and held exhibition matches to promote tennis in the Black community. His efforts helped to integrate recreational facilities around the country and advance civil rights.
