About the Plan

On December 20, 2022, the City Council voted unanimously to adopt the Strategic Energy Plan (SEP) that will guide the City of Greensboro's efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas footprint and transition to clean renewable energy in municipal operations over the next 20 years. The plan will be a long-term blueprint to focus and guide efforts and actions toward a defined energy vision.

Plan Goals

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from city government operations by at least 40 percent from estimated 2005 levels by 2025
  • Reduce energy consumption per square foot in city government-owned buildings by at least 40 percent from estimated 2005 levels by 2025
  • Reach 100 percent renewable energy in city government operations by 2040.
  • Address cost burdens to ensure a just transition to renewable energy for all and prioritize at-risk populations.

The process of developing the SEP involved an extensive program of public engagement, outreach, and education, and included a diverse Community Partnership. This summary provides more information about the process.
