The City of Greensboro has earned LEED Silver® certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for its sustainability efforts.
In recent years, Greensboro has taken many actions to improve energy efficiency, conserve resources, provide better services and facilities, yield greater returns on public investment, and give residents better quality of life. Here are some examples:
- Replacing Greensboro Transit Authority’s diesel buses with clean, efficient all-electric buses.
- Installing solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations.
- Making energy efficiency upgrades at numerous City facilities.
- Launching mobile apps like GSO Collects and Piedmont Discovery.
- Installing smart kiosks in downtown Greensboro.
- Developing a Strategic Energy Plan for transitioning City operations to 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2040.
More About LEED Silver Certification
Earning LEED Silver certification from USGBC recognizes and celebrates these efforts (more info). The LEED for Cities and Communities rating system sets performance measures in seven core categories:
- Integrative Process
- Natural Systems and Ecology
- Transportation and Land Use
- Water Efficiency
- Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
- Materials and Resources
- Quality of Life
Cities earn points towards certification for performance in these categories; some measures are prerequisites, while others are optional credits.
The total points a city scores determines the certification level it receives:
40 to 49 points – Certified
50 to 59 points – Silver
60 to 79 points – Gold
80+ points – Platinum
To earn certification at the Silver level, Greensboro scored a total of 55 points as shown on this chart:
More About Us
Since not all cities score points on all credits, USGBC has created a visual tool (below), called the "Arc Racetrack," that illustrates a city's performance on just the prerequisite measures. This allows cities to be compared on a consistent set of performance metrics.
