Doorway Project
Doorway Project Wraps up its Second Cold Weather Season
For the second consecutive winter, people experiencing homelessness were housed thanks to the City's Doorway Project until March 2024. See photos. The units were first put into use in Greensboro from the end of December 2022 to the end of March 2023.
The project continues to draw much attention from other NC municipalities as the state's first temporary shelter community.
The Doorway Project area consists of 30, two-person, self-sustaining units with bedding. Two units are handicapped-accessible, and restroom and bath facilities are provided.
The project has been financed by the City with contracted onsite services such as case management administered by the Interactive Resource Center (IRC).

FYI
According to a 2022 study by the National Coalition for the Homeless, there's a profound need across the country for a wide range of models and environments to provide meaningful interim housing options for people. Privacy, temperature control, locked doors, case management support, a sense of community, and safety are primary concerns.
According to Michelle Kennedy, director of the Housing and Neighborhood Development Department, interim housing models must be implemented that will provide more accessible, welcoming, dignified, and healthy options for people in crisis.
