How do I apply for a Fire Permit?

  2. Download the permit application PDF you are applying for.
  3. Combine the completed permit application and all related documents into a single PDF (required).
  4. Then submit the single PDF here: www.greensboro-nc.gov/planreviewandtracking
  5. Once your permit has been approved, you will be able to download the approved and stamped set directly from the website. You may then call 336-373-7829 to schedule a fire inspection. Stamped plans are required to be on site for fire inspection.

Fire Permit Submittal Guidelines

  • Requirements conform to the 2018 NC Fire Code, as adopted and amended by the City, and any applicable NFPA standards.
  • Guidelines do not replace or supersede any codes and/or ordinances adopted by the City or any determinations by the Plan Reviewer/Fire Marshal.
  • Plans are reviewed in the order they were submitted. 
  • Deviations from the approved plans may require a plan re-submittal prior to inspection. Failure to submit revised plans prior to the inspection will result in a delay for inspection and sign-off.
  • Plan approvals give authorization for construction and are subject to a fire code compliance inspection for final approval.
  • Plan approvals do not release the contractor or property owner from responsibility of full compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances relating to the construction project.

Fire Department Plan Reviewer/Fire Marshal Duties

  • Review construction plans for commercial and public accessible buildings and multi-family dwellings to make sure construction materials and methods meet the minimum fire and life safety requirements of the 2018 NC Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and amendments to the fire code as adopted by the City's Code of Ordinances.
  • Completes fire inspections.

Building Plan Reviews

  • Structural drawings will be reviewed by all trade plan reviewers.
