About

As a full-service emergency services agency, we provide comprehensive fire protection, emergency medical first responder service, hazardous materials response services, and technical rescue services, and serve as the City’s emergency preparedness coordinating agency. We also enforce state fire codes, conduct fire investigations, and provide public fire and injury prevention education programs for at-risk groups and businesses.

Through contracts with the state, we are also a regional provider of both hazardous materials response services (HAZMAT) and urban search and rescue services (USAR).

The performance of our department's men and women has earned accreditation by the fire service industry through the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE). Also, the public protection services delivered by our department have been rated as “Class 1” by the insurance industry.

To accomplish all this, our department uses 37 companies operating out of 27 fire stations, staffed with 611 full time positions (FTE). Annually, we respond to almost 40,000 emergency calls for service. Apparatus includes:

  • 25 Engine Companies charged with fire extinguishment and also designated as primary Basic Life Support (BLS) units.
  • 11 Ladder Companies (Quints) designated to perform search and rescue, forcible entry, victim rescue, ventilation, ladder rescue and more. Ladder Companies also have engine company capabilities.
  • One Heavy Rescue Company, which is the nucleus of our Special Operations Technical Rescue Team, charged with rescuing residents and firefighters trapped in life-threatening situations.
  • Two Hazardous Material Stations, which investigate and mitigate hazardous materials releases, including decontamination of both victims and responders at large- and small-scale disasters.
