With 51 acres, this cemetery opened in 1877 and is the oldest and most historic City operated cemetery. The design and layout of Green Hill is in the Garden Style with many circular family lots, which was very style appropriate in its time. Those with deep family ties to Greensboro often elect to purchase a plot in Green Hill Cemetery.
Cemetery lots and graves are sold with provisions for perpetual care. Twenty-five percent of the sale price for a lot or grave is placed in a Perpetual Care Trust Fund to ensure that our cemeteries will be properly maintained in the years to come. All sales are governed by the rules and regulations adopted by the Greensboro City Council.
What's Happening at Green Hill Cemetery
The Friends of Green Hill Cemetery, a non-profit organization, provides historic one-and-a-half-hour walking tours of the cemetery throughout the year. These tours, which raise funds for the enhancement of the plantings and structures within the cemetery, are meant to increase your knowledge of Greensboro's history and the local and unusual plants thriving within its 51 acres. Read about our treasure trove of trees.
Please visit the Friends of Green Hill Cemetery website for updates on tours and other happenings. Additional group tours can be arranged at your request and/or you can purchase A Walking Tour of Green Hill Cemetery booklet for $5. Call us at 336-373-2160 or email us to purchase your copy.
Tree and Shrub Inventory
The Friends of the Green Hill Cemetery worked with the City’s Geographical Information System (GIS) team to create a comprehensive Green Hill Cemetery Tree and Shrub Inventory. This inventory catalogs more than 900 trees and shrubs in the cemetery. The project reflects the combined efforts of a professional botanist volunteer, the City’s GIS staff, and the City’s cemetery staff in coordination with Friends of Green Hill Cemetery.
