Post Date:11/19/2024 11:47 AM

The Mabel D. Smith Active Adult Center, 2401 Fairview St., received its five-year re-certification as a North Carolina “Center of Excellence” on October 29 by the North Carolina Division of Aging. Centers of Excellence are recognized for providing exemplary services and opportunities to older adults in their communities, and serve as models to other senior centers across the state.

Assistant Director of the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging Eboni Lewis presented the Certificate of Excellence to Smith Center Supervisor Teania Jackson and Active Adults Program Coordinator Jennie Matkins during the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on November 13.

The Smith Active Adult Center opened in 1976 as Fairview Recreation Center. It was dedicated in 1982 as the Mabel D. Smith Center at Fairview. In 1998 it became the Mabel D. Smith Senior Center and transitioned from a traditional recreation center to a senior center serving adults ages 55 and up throughout the Greensboro community. In September 2019, the center’s name changed again to the Mabel D. Smith Active Adult Center and began serving active adults ages 50 and up.
