City Council last night, Tuesday, December 5, agreed to commit $100,000 for emergency hotel assistance by the Guilford County Continuum of Care (CoC) for the remainder of fiscal year 2023-24 for those experiencing homelessness.
“Providing shelter isn’t just about addressing homelessness, it’s about restoring dignity, nurturing hope and building a foundation for a brighter future,” said Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan. “It’s a testament to the shared humanity and our commitment to ensuring that no one is left out in the cold.”
This allocation by the City of Greensboro is contingent upon a match commitment by the City of High Point and Guilford County. During a Guilford County Homelessness Taskforce meeting in November, the two cities and county agreed to commit $100,000 each to be used for emergency hotel assistance, which historically, has been an alternative housing option during winter months or to assist residents temporarily displaced by code violations.
“We thank Guilford County and our Continuum of Care partners for its collaboration with the City on this very critical issue, and for remaining committed to facilitating and supporting short-term housing options that assist some of our most vulnerable residents experiencing homelessness,” said Nasha McCray, Greensboro assistant city manager.
This funding is in addition to the $297,000 City Council allocated to the Interactive Resource Center (IRC) to support its 24/7 service expansion, which will begin in early January.
