Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Brooklyn based artist who got his start creating graffiti. He went on to develop a Neo-expressionist style, which is characterized by a rough handling of material. As a young black man living in New York, he used his work to criticize classism and racism. His art remains especially relevant today given the social and political climates across the world.
In this program, we will learn more about this important artist and imitate his vibrant style in decorating the cover of a journal. Basquiat filled his own journals with poetry fragments, sketches, and personal observations. With your journal, you can do the same!
