City Council
Action Wrap-Up |
Council approves new subcontractor
for aquatic center that will save thousands of
dollars.
At its meeting on Tuesday, March 16,
Greensboro City Council approved switching to a
new heating, ventilation and air conditioning
(HVAC) subcontractor for the Greensboro
Aquatic Center and ACC Hall of Champions--- a move
that will reduce the overall cost of the two
projects by $150,000 and save thousands of dollars
in operational costs each year.
The contract was
originally awarded to Bahnson, who planned on
installing an "off-the-shelf" HVAC system. But
after Council directed City staff to find ways to
decrease the cost of the aquatic center and hall
of champions, which totals $18,323,961, the two
lowest bidders, Bahnson and Systems Contractors
Inc., were asked to provide a bid for a custom
design. Systems Contractors Inc. was able to
design a system that will save the City $150,000
off the total cost of the project, plus an
additional annual operational savings estimated at
$20,000.
Council
also:
-
Approved an
economic incentive grant not to exceed $542,920
for SCD I, LLC to prepare five sites located in
east Greensboro's Urban Progress Zone for
commercial development. The grant will pay for
storm water improvements, extending a reinforced
concrete pipe under Yanceyville Street,
installing roadway and intersection
improvements, and connecting Third Street to
Maple Street.

Fill out and
return your Census
2010 form.
By now,
you should have received your Census
2010 form. If not, it should be mailed or
delivered to your home shortly. Remember to fill
it out and return as soon as it arrives.
Your participation in
the Census will help determine how much federal
money Greensboro gets for healthcare, housing,
roads, transit, schools, social services, job
training, and other service. It also determines
where district lines are drawn for political
elections and the number of representatives our
state gets in Congress.
With only 10
questions, the Census 2010 form takes only 10
minutes to complete. Your citizenship is not
asked and all
your answers are
private and confidential.

ARRA Funds New
Street Resurfacing Project |
Work is fully
funded by federal stimulus
funds.
One of the City of Greensboro's first
projects using the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act (ARRA) federal stimulus funds
started today. The City has hired
Thompson-Arthur Paving to resurface streets at
three locations:
-
Cone Boulevard,
from Elm Street to Summit Avenue
-
Friendly Avenue,
from Aycock Street to Wendover Avenue
-
Smith Street, from
Battleground Avenue to Eugene
Street.
This $1.5 million
resurfacing work is fully funded through ARRA
federal stimulus funds. The purpose of ARRA's $787
billion recovery package is to jump-start the
economy to create and save jobs, spur economic
activity, and foster accountability and
transparency in government spending.
Greensboro's
resurfacing work meets specific requirements set
forth by ARRA by being a "shovel ready" project
that begins immediately and improves
infrastructure. Resurfacing is expected to be
completed by September.
