Run
Part of National Peace Officers' Week,
which is held May 8-14, the annual Law Enforcement
Memorial 5K Run will be held Saturday, May 8,
starting at 8:30 am. Registration is $20 before
May 1 and $25 after. Proceeds will benefit the
Greensboro Special Olympics. Learn more.

Hydrant Testing
If your tap water
looks discolored, don't panic. It's due to the
Fire Department conducting a semi-annual fire
hydrant testing now through May 15. Opening
hydrants can sometimes cause temporary water
discoloration in nearby homes. Learn more.
New Police
Recruits The Greensboro Police
Department welcomed 32 new recruits to its ranks
during a recent graduation ceremony. This marks
the department's 91st graduating class. The new
officers will now be assigned to various field
operation divisions and will work with a police
training officer for 14 weeks. Once they
successfully complete that portion of their
training, they can begin patrolling on their
own.
Brown Bag
Lunch Series
The City's Commission on
the Status of Women and the Greensboro YWCA are
informing and empowering women through their Brown Bag Lunch Series. The
next session, titled "Invisible but Essential:
Immigrant Women in America," will be held Tuesday,

Lake Townsend
Watershed Park Open HouseLake Townsend Watershed Park
staff will host an open house from 9 am to 3 pm
Saturday, May 1. Stop by to check out the new
fishing pier and all the handicap accessible
facilities. Free pier fishing will be available,
the Lake Townsend Yacht Club will provide sailing
demonstrations, and door prizes will be given away
throughout the

Council delays
voting on Land
Development Ordinance.
At its meeting on Tuesday, April 20,
Greensboro City Council delayed voting on the
draft Land Development Ordinance (LDO) until its
June 15 meeting to give residents more time to
review the document. A public meeting will be held
on the draft LDO on Thursday, May 20, from
4-7 pm at the Greensboro Coliseum's Special Events
Center, 1921 W. Lee St.
The draft LDO will
serve as the source for standards and regulations
related to land-use and development in the city
and includes city-wide rezoning policies that will
make limited changes to existing zoning districts.
The updated version
represents the largest update and overhaul to the
City's development regulations in nearly 20 years.

Upcoming Meetings
- A Special City Council
Meeting has been scheduled for 5 pm
Tuesday, April 27, in the Council Chamber of the
Melvin Municipal Office Building (MMOB), 300 W.
Washington St., for the purpose of adjourning to
closed session to conduct the City Manager's
evaluation.
- City Council will meet
with the Guilford Legislative Delegation to
review highlights the Greensboro 2010
Legislative Agenda at 4 pm Thursday, April
29, in the Plaza Level Conference Room of the
MMOB.
- Following Council's April 29 meeting,
the City will host the "Take it to
Raleigh" public forum in
the Council Chamber of the MMOB from
6-8 pm. During that meeting, which will be aired
live on Channel 13 and online, the public will
be able to share their ideas and comments with
members of the North Carolina House and Senate.
- Council members T. Dianne Bellamy-Small,
District 1, and Jim Kee, District 2, have
scheduled a Town Hall Meeting
to discuss how possible cuts in the City's
FY2010-11 budget will impact their respective
districts. The meeting will be held at 7 pm
Monday, May 3, at the Greensboro Historical
Museum, 130 Summit
Ave.

to Give Input on Police Chief
Search |
City starts
national search for new
chief.
The City is beginning a national search for a
new chief of the Greensboro Police Department and
it wants your input. The City will host three
public meetings to solicit input on the evaluation
criteria that will be used to screen potential
police chief candidates.
Meeting dates and
locations are as follows:
- Monday, May 10, from 12 noon to 1 pm at the
Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center,
Meeting Room 4A, 1921 W. Lee St.
- Monday, May 10, from 6:30-7:30 pm at the
Lewis Recreation Center, 3110 Forest Lawn Dr.
- Tuesday, May 11, from 6:30-7:30 pm at Barber
Park, 1500 Dans Rd.

City Receives
Grants to Make Housing More Energy
Efficient |
Funds will
be used to retrofit more than 5,000 housing
units to make them more energy
efficient.
The City was recently awarded a $5 million
grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to
build energy efficient retrofitting on more than
5,000 housing units and 125 non-residential
buildings. The money, available through the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of
2009, is one of 25 grants awarded by the DOE for
its Retrofit Ramp-Up Program. Read

New
Surveillance Cameras Installed to Increase Safety
and Deter Crime |
Cameras will be
used at several busy
intersections.
Beginning
Friday, April 30, the City of Greensboro will
begin a 6-month test period of using new
surveillance cameras at several city intersections
in an effort to increase public safety and deter
criminal activity. The cameras will be in use at
the intersections of Holden and High Point roads,
South Elm and McGee streets, and North Elm and
Market streets. A camera will also be in use at
the intersection of West Lee and Aycock streets
after technical issues are resolved in that
