returning your form is quick and easy. Watch this

Fair
HousingApril is Fair Housing Month
and the City wants to make sure you know your
rights. Under the City's Fair Housing Ordinance,
it is against the law to discriminate in housing
based on race, color, gender, religion, national
origin, disability, or family status. If you feel
you have been a victim of housing discrimination,
call the City's Human Relations
Department at

Sewage
Collection & Water Reclamation
ReportThe City's 2009 Sewage
Collection and Water Reclamation Report is
available online and at all Water
Resources facilities, City libraries and the
Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W.
Washington St. The report provides information on
operation of the City's water system, overall
performance and any violations that have occurred
for the year.
Spring
Cleaning
When you start your spring
cleaning, remember to separate yard waste from
trash and recycling. To dispose of yard waste, can
it, bag it or bundle it and place it on the curb
on your regular trash collection day. Learn more.
Safety
Town
Applications are now being
accepted for Safety Town, a free, two-hour a day,
two-week program for five and six-year-olds that
teaches important safety lessons. Learn

City Council
Action Wrap-Up |
Council gives
green light to College Hill
rezoning.
At its meeting on Tuesday, April 6,
Greensboro City Council approved a rezoning in the
College Hill neighborhood to allow construction of
new student apartments on Spring Garden Street.
A valid protest
petition was submitted by College Hill residents
opposing the rezoning, but Council approved it as
a positive new development in the
community.
The development,
which consists of 219 apartments for students,
will be built by Edwards Communities and includes
design features to help preserve the look of
surrounding neighborhoods.
Council
also:

Rejected plans for
construction of an outdoor amphitheater at the
Greensboro Coliseum Complex.

Approved a
resolution in support of Suzie's Law, which aims
to increase the penalty for maiming or killing
an animal from a Class I Felony, the lowest
level felony in the state, to a Class F Felony,
which carries a maximum sentence of 59 months.

Approved an
amendment to the Greensboro Code of Ordinance
that bans peddlers, solicitors, etc. from
coming within 300 feet of public/private
schools and childcare facilities to
provide greater protection to students, parents
and visitors.

New Assistant
City Manager Selected |
Speedling will oversee
activities of police, fire, human resources, and
GM 9-1-1.
A
new assistant city manager for public safety and
human resources has been selected. Michael
Speedling, who has served as interim assistant
city manager for public safety and human resources
since February, will oversee activities of the
City's police, fire and human resources
departments, as well as Guilford Metro 9-1-1. He
will also continue to oversee the City's security
division, which was his role prior to joining the
city manager's office.
This
is a new senior-level position created by the city
manager in response to the priority of Greensboro
City Council to address two of the City's most
critical needs--- public safety and human
resources. Speedling was selected for this
position because of his extensive background in
emergency services and preparedness, which spans
more than three decades. Read

Guilford Metro
9-1-1 Awarded International Accreditation for
Excellence |
This marks its
second international accreditation in less than
four months.
Guilford Metro 9-1-1 (GM 9-1-1) was recently
awarded international accreditation as an
Emergency Medical Dispatch Center of Excellence
from the International Academies of Emergency
Dispatch (IAED), a standard-setting organization
that promotes safe and effective emergency
dispatch services world-wide. This is the second
accreditation GM 9-1-1 has received from IAED in
less than four months; the first was for achieving
the Emergency Fire Dispatch Center of Excellence
accreditation.
GM 9-1-1 is now the
134th emergency communications center / 9-1-1
center in the entire world to be awarded this
distinction, and becomes only the fifteenth
emergency communications center in the world to
hold dual accreditation in Emergency Medical
Dispatch and Emergency Fire Dispatch. Read

park and join the Greensboro Transit Authority and
the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation
(PART) for the Triad Commute Challenge. Participating in the challenge is
easy. All you have to do is choose an alternative
form of travel such as carpooling, biking,
catching the bus, or even walking at least once
between now and July 10.
Last year, more than
2,500 people participated and helped reduce
automobile travel in the Triad by 1.2 million
vehicle miles.
