Thanksgiving Holiday
City of Greensboro offices, buildings
and facilities are closed Thursday, November
25, and Friday, November 26, in observation of
Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Trash Recycling
Schedule
No garbage, recycling, bulk trash, yard
waste, or appliance collections take place on
Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 25.
Thursday's collections take place Wednesday,
November 24. Friday's collections remain the
same.
City Loose Leaf Collection
Underway
Picking up leaves can be a chore, but
the City's annual Loose Leaf Collection Program,
which runs from November 1 through January 22,

Annual Ecumenical Celebration
of Thanksgiving
The annual Ecumenical Celebration of
Thanksgiving, themed "And Still, We Give Thanks,"
is Sunday, November 21 at 4 pm at Dana Auditorium
on the campus of Guilford College. The event is
free and open to the public.
Lake Higgins Watershed Park
Offers Trout Fishing
Lake Higgins Park, 4235
Hamburg Mill Rd., is offering trout fishing
at the Taylor Tuner Hatchery Pond, starting
November 19. The fee is $1 to fish and $3.75-per

City Council Action

Use
of $5 million grant from U.S. Department
of Energy approved
At
the City Council meeting on November 9, Council
voted to approve the use of a $5 million federal
grant from the U.S. Department
of Energy. One of only 25 cities
in the country selected for the grant, the
BetterBuildings program is funded through the
American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act. The City's award of $5
million will be used to assist property owners
with the assessment and installation of energy
efficient improvements to their existing homes,
businesses and other buildings. The program also
offers opportunities for community partners to
participate and several components that are aimed
at creating job opportunities and spurring private
investment throughout the City.
In
other action, Council voted not to allow a second
commercial vehicle to be parked at a residential
property and approved a motion to table their
discussion regarding the adjustment of City water
rates. The water rates topic will remain on the
Council agenda for its next meeting on Tuesday,
November 16. To

Skating Rink Opens this Week |
Downtown rink open
November 17 through January 21
The
WFMY News 2 Winterfest ice skating rink opens
to the public at 4 pm Wednesday, November 17, at
Festival Park, 200 N. Davie
St. The City's Parks and Recreation Department is
providing logistic and utility support for the
rink, which holds its grand opening celebration
Saturday, November 20. Rink activities include
public skating, hockey, exhibition figure skating,
and rental for private parties.
The rink,
which is 40-feet by 85-feet, is open to
the public from 4-9 pm Mondays through Thursdays
while public school is in session, 4-10 pm on
Fridays, 11 am to 10 pm on Saturdays, and 12 noon
to 6 pm on Sundays. On school holidays, Monday
through Thursday hours are 11 am to 10 pm.
Admission to the rink, including skates,
is $8 per person. Groups of 20 or more skate for

City Taps Julia
McNeil Danish as New Attorney |
Danish starts her work
with City on December 16
City
Manager Rashad Young has named Julia McNeil Danish
as the new City Attorney. Danish's selection
concludes the City's national search, which
included a phone interview with each of the
finalists, a leadership assessment evaluation, and
interview panels with the executive staff, city
department heads and the staff of the City
Attorney's office.
Danish
comes to Greensboro from Cincinnati, where she
served as vice president for government affairs
for the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. She also
has worked with municipalities as city solicitor
for the City of Cincinnati and director of law for
Dayton, Ohio.
A
graduate of The Ohio State University College of
Law, Danish will begin her work with the City on
December 16,

New Measures
Unveiled for Downtown |
Councilmember Matheny
addresses safety, accountability
concerns
On
Wednesday, November 10, City Councilmember Zack
Matheny announced several steps to increase safety
and promote security to those participating in
Greensboro's downtown nightlife. The zero
tolerance approach includes several proposed
ordinance revisions and requirements designed to
maintain a welcoming environment in the downtown
area.
The
measures involve revisions to existing
ordinances that address issues related to the age
and presence of downtown visitors. The proposals
also include a curfew that prohibits individuals
under the age of 18 from being in downtown after
11 pm, a policy that prohibits loitering within 50
feet of an establishment that serves alcohol, and
an increase in the cost, to $5, to park in the
City's parking decks after 9 pm.
New
requirements were also proposed to further
regulate downtown nightclubs, including the
creation of a new Entertainment
License, while the City announced an enhanced
partnership with Downtown Greensboro Inc. that
will provide for the expansion of surveillance
camera systems into other parts of downtown. For

Greensboro Police Host
Community Forums |
Chief Miller and senior
staff meet with area residents
The
Greensboro Police Department hosts its final
Police/Community
Forum, Monday, November 22. The Central Division
meeting begins at 6:30 pm at the Greensboro Historical Museum,
130 Summit Ave.
Chief
Ken Miller, senior command staff, and patrol
commanders will provide crime statistics as well
as discuss the functions of patrol work groups,
call prioritization, and other facts unique to
each patrol district. Miller will also review
changes in GPD including mission and core values
revisions, a restructuring process, core
strategies, and discipline process revisions.
There
will be time set aside at each meeting for
questions from the audience, or residents can
leave their comments via this online form. For
