City Council Action
Wrap-Up |
Council approves
Horse Pen Creek Rd.
improvements
During
its meeting on March 15, Greensboro City Council
authorized improvements to Horse Pen Creek Rd.,
between New Garden Rd. and Battleground Ave. The
improvements include widening the road to four
lanes, with a median, and bicycle lanes and
sidewalks on both sides. The project is estimated
to cost $28 million and is part of the
voter-approved 2008 Transportation Bond
Funds.
Council
also approved a joint-annexation agreement between
the City of Greensboro and the Town of Jamestown.
The agreement, not yet formally adopted, would
shift land to the Jamestown side of the boundary
along Mackay Rd., along portions of High Point Rd.
and Grandover Pkwy. Meanwhile, land would be
shifted to the Greensboro boundary along the new
alignment of High Point Rd. and a portion of
Guilford College Rd. The joint-annexation would
better define the boundaries of both
municipalities and aid in future residential and
commercial development within those jurisdictions.
In
other action, the Carolina's Section of the
Professional Golfers' Association of America was
granted a 40-year lease and three acres of land at
Bryan Park. The organization and its eight
employees are relocating to Greensboro from
Myrtle Beach, SC. In addition,
Council agreed to meet with five companies that
submitted waste management services proposals for
a preliminary evaluation and review during its
work session on Tuesday, March 22, at 1
pm.
The
next City Council meeting is Tuesday, April 5, at
5:30 pm in the Council Chamber of the Melvin
Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington
St.

New
Energy Efficiency Program Offered |
Rebates
provided for energy assessments,
improvements
The
City has launched a program to assist residential
and commercial property owners in making energy
efficient upgrades to their homes and businesses.
The Early Adopters Program is an element of a $5
million BetterBuildings grant awarded to the City
by the Department of Energy.
To
participate in the program, property owners must
first have an energy assessment of their building
conducted by a BPI or RESNET certified
professional. Once completed, owners must submit a
copy of the assessment along with an Early
Adopters application to the City for approval. If
approved, the City will rebate 50 percent of the
cost of the assessment, up to $150 for
single-family homes.
After
the assessment rebate is approved, recommended
energy upgrades should be completed by a
contractor. If enough improvements are made to
make a building 15 percent more energy efficient,
the City will then rebate 20 percent of the total
cost of the home improvements, up to $4,000 for
single-family homes. Rebate amounts for other
types of buildings, including multi-family and
commercial properties, are also
available.
More
information about the program can be found online.
