City Council Action
Wrap-Up |
City Council
approves 2011-12 budget
At
its June 21 meeting, Greensboro City Council
approved the City's 2011-12 fiscal year budget.
With the new budget, the City's tax and water
rates will remain the same and there will be no
fees charged for household hazardous waste
services. Among a series of changes approved
within the budget and set to become effective
July 1, an increase in parking fees in downtown
parking decks and an increase in parking violation
fines are included.
The
parking decks will remain free for the first hour
of parking during business hours, but a $2 fee
will be charged for parking in the decks after 9
pm. The new parking fee will help offset the costs
for cleaning and providing security in the decks.
Meanwhile, parking violations increase from $25 to
$35 in illegal parking zones and fire lane parking
fines will be $50.
Council
also approved a study to determine the feasibility
of converting the one-lane section of Greene
Street to two-way. The conversion would make it
more convenient for downtown travel.
City
Council's next regularly scheduled meeting is
Tuesday, July 19, at 5:30 pm in the Council
Chamber of the Melvin Municipal Office Building,
300 W. Washington St.

City Adapts New
Water Treatment Process |
City changes water
treatment process to
chloramines
On July
25, the City will change its current water
treatment process from chlorine to chloramines to
meet new federal regulatory drinking water
standards. The new
standards require
water utilities to maintain lower concentration
levels of disinfection by-products (DBPs). DBPs
are formed when chlorine mixes with organic
material naturally found in
lakes.
Chloraminated
water is safe for drinking, bathing, cooking, and
all other daily water uses. However, there
are three groups that need to take special
precautions when using chloraminated water: kidney
dialysis patients, fish, pond and amphibian
owners, and specialized businesses using highly
treated water. Dialysis centers and
medical facilities have been notified of the
change.
Chloraminated
water is harmful to fish in a similar manner, and
must be removed or neutralized before it enters
the bloodstream. Local pet supply stores should be
able to provide additional details, and
specialized business owners using highly treated
water are encouraged to contact their equipment or
manufacturer suppliers for guidance.
For more
information on the conversion, call the
City at 336-373-2489 or visit www.greensboro-nc.gov/water. |
