City Council
Recap |
Cancellation
of Gate City waste management public hearing and
changes to GTA service routes on Council
agenda
At
its meeting on September 20, Greensboro City
Council voted to cancel the public hearing
regarding the awarding of a contract to Gate City
Waste Services for
the operation of the City's
municipal solid waste services, including White
Street Landfill. Earlier in
the day, Gate City representatives asked for their
contract bid to be removed from consideration. In
addition, Council voted to extend the City's
current contract with Republic Services through
the end of 2011, continuing the current waste
management process.
In
other action, Council voted to eliminate
Greensboro Transit Authority's (GTA) Irving
Park/Starmount shuttle service and the Evening
Career Express service near the Piedmont Triad
International Airport. The move comes at the
recommendation of the GTA board and allows for the
reallocation of funds to further bolster GTA's
routes that are experiencing a higher volume of
passengers.
The next regularly scheduled City
Council meeting is Tuesday, October 4, at 5:30 pm
in the Council Chamber of the Melvin Municipal
Office Building, 300 W. Washington
St. To

Ca$h
and Cans Recycling
Challenge
|
City schools earn money
by
recycling
The Ca$h and
Cans Recycling
Challenge is a fun, educational way for students
to learn good stewardship and teamwork, while
raising money for their school. The event, held in
recognition of America Recycles Day on November
15, is open to all elementary and middle schools
within Greensboro city limits. Students collect
aluminum beverage cans, place them in clear
plastic bags (make
sure cans are clean and dry), and bring them to
the FCR Recycling Center, 706 Patton Ave., by
November 11. Schools that collect the most
aluminum cans win a trophy, a check for the
amount of aluminum collected, and a celebration
event for their school at Proehlific Park Family
Sports Complex & Fitness Center.
The
Challenge ends at 2 pm Friday, November 11. The
winning schools will be announced on November
15. Schools
must be registered to participate. For more
information, contact Yvonne Foust at
373-2053. |
City
Supports Junior
Achievement |
Business
and City leaders volunteer in
classrooms
Business and City leaders will soon be in
school classrooms volunteering their talents
as teachers for the Junior Achievement
program. Volunteer teachers receive
training and are then scheduled to instruct
students during five classroom
visits. Class subjects highlight citizenship,
business, ethics, character and other
topics.
Last
year, 7 police volunteers including Chief Ken
Miller, participated. Students learn
about authority figures as "human beings"
through this classroom
experience. For
more information, or to register to volunteer, in
the future contact Davida Hamilton at
544-0351. |
