The Process
The City's compost is made from residential yard waste, tree and grass clippings, and leaves. The process takes place on 10 acres in the White Street Landfill where the material is ground into two-inch pieces. It is then put in windrows where the temperature is monitored for three days to kill seeds and pathogens. The entire curing process takes 8-10 months.
After curing, the product is run through a screening process to separate the finer particles for compost. The finished product is piled and ready for loading. The City receives about 35,000 tons of raw materials each year and processes 24,000 tons into compost while the remainder is made into mulch.
